My name is Philipp and you are reading Creativerly, the internet corner where I unpack my musings, curate and write about noteworthy apps and software, and explore the latest trends in design and tech.

Hey and welcome to Creativerly 331 👋

A couple of days ago, I started to write a new blog post for my personal website philipptemmel.com. It is about the topic of being overwhelmed by the field of technology right now, as well as asking myself the question of whether there is any purpose attached to my work, realizing that basically I am just contributing to capitalism, while the world is burning, wars are increasing, minorities are at a risk, fascism is rising, while vulnerable groups like trans folks and the LGTBQ community in general are receiving increasingly more hate. And here I am, working in tech, increasing stakeholders' values, although, I should get my privileged ass up and help the people who need it most, do something useful, work on something meaningful, something that serves people.

The blog post will contain much more of my thoughts, and I will make sure to share it here in the newsletter too once it is published.

I find myself in a situation I have been struggling with every now and then, but it has not been as tough as it is right now. With everything going on currently in the world, seeing how this planet that gets called 'home' by 8,2 Billion people, gets destroyed, burnt, overrun by fascism and war, controlled by elites and capitalists, makes it hard to focus on my own life, my own purpose. There are so many thoughts floating around my mind, and writing and journaling has helped me to stay sane to a certain extent. Just getting those thoughts out of my mind, written down, and then published is a certain relief. But the much bigger relief would be to leave the corporate and capitalistic work behind to focus on something more meaningful and purposeful.

Mastodon updates its terms to prohibit AI model training

While it unfortunately became a common practice to bury the information that different digital services that offer their own AI features and models, to train those LLMs on users' data, as well as large players in the field of AI simply scrape the whole internet, Mastodon just updated their terms of service in order to fight against scrapers and bots that crawl websites to train AI models. In an email sent out to their users, Mastodon stated that from now on they explicityl prohibit the scraping of user data for unauthorized purposes.

Those new terms will be applicable starting July 1, and have legal language that prohibits any data extraction and development of an automated system.

Figma acquires Payload

Payload is an open-source Next.js backend that people can use to build headless CMS, headless eCommerce, Apps, digital asset management and more. In a recent announcement blog post, James Mikrut, the founder of Payload, shard the news that it got acquired by Figma. With this acquisition, James Mikrut states that the teams at Figma and Payload will tacke the gap between design and code, as designers design in Figma, developers recreate in code, and content teams struggle to maintain it all.

The announcement blog post also stated that Payload remains open source with Figma's full commitment to OSS, people will still be able to self-host Payload, and James Mikrut and the team will continue running Payload. In addition to that, Payload will integrate with design systems in ways no other CMS can, and a lot more people will be using, testing, and building on Payload, as it will integrate with Figma.

At Config 2025, Figma introduced loads of new products, and among them Figma Sites, a tool to design websites directly in Figma and publish them online. They mentioned that they will be rolling out a CMS for it in the months ahead, and that Figma CMS will make life easier for marketers and designers who need to update website content, and Payload brings all the stuff developers love.

Mental Wealth

Why you should work 4 hours a day, according to science – “When you examine the lives of history's most creative figures, you are immediately confronted with a paradox: They organized their lives around their work, but not their days.”

Boundaries for Designers – “Let’s talk about boundaries. What are they? There are plenty of definitions, but I keep returning to the same few sources when I need a reminder.”

The Best Interfaces We Never Built – “Five fictional interface concepts that could reshape how humans and machines interact. Every piece of technology is an interface. Though the word has come to be a shorthand for what we see and use on a screen, an interface is anything that connects two or more things together. While that technically means that a piece of tape could be considered an interface between a picture and a wall, or a pipe between water and a home, interfaces become truly exciting when they create both a physical connection and a conceptual one — when they create a unique space for thinking, communicating, creating, or experiencing.”

Sleep Has No Magic Number – “In Japan, late nights are a way of life—the final trains of the night are often packed with people traveling back home in the midnight hours from work or a night out. In fact, studies consistently find that people living in Japan get far fewer winks per night than people living in other parts of the world. And yet, Japan also has the longest average lifespan of any of the world’s most advanced economies. There are a lot of elderly people out and about.”
